Epson V11H291120 Review by Tushar Tyagi "shell kernel" (USA)

This box rocks. Having a great time watching movies on the big screen at home. No need to talk in inches anymore, talk in feet now. I don't have anything to play 1080p yet but even 720p is simply awesome. The adjustable lens assembly is another great feature to be able to keep it in a corner of the room. Its a bit bulky though.

Epson V11H291120 Review by P. Edmondson

If you are looking to break into the 1080p projector territory, this is an excellent projector! I've had the chance to use my 6100 now for a few weeks, and it definitely doesn't disappoint. Image quality is fantastic, and the colors are great too (when configured correctly). I've been using mine with the HDMI output of a Harman Kardon AVR-254 7x50W 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver with HDMI 1.3a Repeater.

Pros:

* This sucker is BRIGHT. I am amazed at how nice it looks even with ambient light.
* Minimal screen door, as should be expected for a 1080p projector.
* The expanded color mode is beautiful, and works quite well.
* Contrast ratio is good, but don't believe the 18000:1. It is still remarkably good for a <$2000 projector, and blows others that I've seen out of the water. But I have seen a lot of compression-artifact banding on Bluray sources -- you need a good video source to achieve good results.

Cons:

* I haven't figured out why yet, but sometimes the projector loses focus. It could be vibrations from traffic nearby, kids playing upstairs, or the startup sequence, but the focus definitely needs to be tweaked from time to time. If you plan to mount your projector where it is not easily accessible, I would go so far as to suggest a different projector.
* If you have an HDMI source, it doesn't seem to allow you to change the aspect ratio and zoom options. This gets kind of annoying when watching a letterboxed 4:3 source, because you can't zoom in on the smaller image frame -- you are stuck with the combined letterboxing and pillarboxing.
* The lens shift feature is excellent, but beware the limitations -- you can't shift fully in all directions. When shifting far to the left or right, you can't also shift fully up or down. And if you are shifting near to the center point, it becomes difficult to tweak the shift because it wants to lock in on the center point.
* A number of the color mode seem useless and blown out in the out-of-the-box settings. I haven't adjusted much to try out the other settings....

All in all, I'm incredibly happy, as I couldn't spend more on a higher-end projector, and this gave me almost everything I wanted. For a five star home theater rating, you'll probably need to spend at least $1000 more...

Epson V11H291120 Review by Thomas Runge

Well, I upgraded from a Panasonix AX200U, a 720p projector. The setup was no problem, even though the wheels to shift the picture can not be easily adjusted - the vertical one needed to be set just a little bit to the right in my set up and automatically jumped back to the middle position. Pretty poor design, but I finally got it as needed.

The picture is great, but I honestly can not see a huge difference to the 720p Panasonix projector. It is bright enough to get a decent picture during the day, the blacks though looked a bit washed out, actually worse than on the 720 projector.

The reason for the bad rating though is that the picture through the HDMI signal could not be displayed. I have a 1.5 years old Pioneer VSX-1017 TXV 7.1 receiver which (supposedly) support HDMI 1.3. All I got on the projector though was that the signal was not allowed to be displayed on the projector. What a crap!! I called the Epson hotline (even though India based, it was pretty good) and the response was "We know that there are compatibility issues with some projectors. Bad luck." Nothing in regards to if/when/how this would be fixed, no excuse for selling such a piece of junk. As a workaround I hooked it up to a switch vs. using the receiver, but that is not going to be the long term solution. This thing goes back.

I still do recommend buying this projector - nut check if it will work with your receiver.

Edit: I realized ít is not really Epson's fault, but Pioneer sells "1080p" receivers that do not allow 1080p passthrough and because of that and the idiotic copy protection mechanisms, will not work with this projector. I bought a HDMI switch and now everythings seems fine. Picture quality is good.
